case 580c shuttle problem

I have a case 580C backhoe the worked fine when it was parked 2 years ago. I got it running again and everything works however the shuttle lever does not want to go into the full neutral position it goes straight from forward to reverse. if you play with the lever a little you can get it to stop moving but when you lift the rear tires they still want to travel forward. because of this when the engine is running you cant get the machine into any gear (just grinds). any ideas on what to check first?

Anyone had this happen or anything like it? I thought there was a shift Solonoid that controlled the directions but there is none on this model

My 580k has solenoids. If I had to guess you may have a valve sticking. Most likely the forward valve. Is the linkage from the shift lever direct to it? Maybe you can see it from underneath to see if the valve can be removed or to see if it's moving correctly.

If it's like the power shuttle on my 480C, it has a mechanical linkage to the transmission. Unless the detent spring/mechanism has broken, not sure what the problem would be. My 480 has a little dog, that drops in a notch on the shifter to lock the shuttle lever in the neutral position.

There is also a tubular connection under the dash that joins the shuttle shifter shaft together, so as to remove the upper part of the shifter lever. There are clamps, and a pin that locks it together. You might check under there to make sure the pin is not worn, or partly sheared, or clamps slipped if it did.
