case 850 197?
I have an older 850 crawler that I bought about 2 yrs. ago . Every since I have owned this dozer I have had a trans problem. When I first got it I noticed after 45 min to an hour the trans would start over heating, also the torque converter pressure would start dropping. At first I thought maybe low fluid or clogged filter but neither was the case . Now after about an hour of running it wants to quit pulling .It sometimes will not want to turn with the left or right high / low levers.I can shut everything down for a couple of hours restart, after cool down, and everything will opperate fine until as I said before about 45 min. to an hour . I have been told this could be a charge pump problem. Can anyone tell me if that is my problem?

Strick1,

You're definitely showing all the symptoms of a weak pump.
Get an inexpensive guage and see what the transmission pressures are when the machine is hot and then when it's cold.

I'm not sure exactly where to check the pressures. It's been a long time since I worked on Case and I rarely worked on anything larger than a 450, but the 850's not that much different.

You didn't say which series it is, and this may have no revelance to yours...

We got a new 850H series, in about '02 before I retired. It had similar symptoms. Come to find out, there was an oil port on I believe a mainshaft bearing in the tranny, that either had not been drilled out at the factory, or a bushing spun away from the hole...

None the less, the bearing/shaft would get hot, and eventually stop the dozer.

Took it back to the dealer, as it was still under warranty... And of course, they had NEVER seen anything like that. Maybe not, but over the next couple of years, we heard that more than several had the same problem...

We also supposedly got the first 850G off the assembly line. After a couple of months, the I believe it was electric over hydraulic, parking brake switch went bad. It would either not move very easily, or wouldn't move at all... A definite squawk when you tried to move it. Replaced the switch under warranty, and as far as I know, never had anymore problems.

I have a Case 850 E dozer and the converter temp goes up after a couple hours of use and Is there a filter on the convertor and transmission. Also it seems to leak oil out of a small box on the back of the convertor. Thanks for your help.
