I have a case 1690 that will not let me put pto in gear without turning off tractor. When the tractor is off, I can put it in gear no problem then re-start it. Of course, that makes it hard to start with load on pto and unsafe. This tractor has a lever with lock that looks like a parking brake (actually it's right beside the parking brake) that is supposed to dis-engage the clutch to the pto. I can't hardly get it to move so I unhooked it from the linkage that goes into the housing right under the steps and now it pulls fine, locks up like it should, and returns as it should when released. I can also move the linkage easily with no resistance. I pulled inspection plate off and can see the bearing carrier and thrust plate moving back and forth easily. It looks like the bearing however is up against the pressure plate for the clutch. when I manually move the linkage back and forth, it never reaches the bearing.

Now, to be honest, I have no idea what I am looking at in there and would love any advice since I do not know if what I am seeing is as it should be or not.

Thanks in advance!

My dad and grandfather both had 2090's. They maybe similiar, i'll ask dad. Grandpa has passed. It almost sounds like there is a clutch pack problem or a slide collar issue. I know a case tractor salvage yard and repair shop. Personal message me if you want the info on the salvage and repair shop.

I talked to my dad. It has been many years since he had his 2090. He said that because it slides into the engaged position relatively easy without the engine running the slide collar is probably ok. If the slide collar had a bure or was (jimmied) up it would be hard to get into the engaged position with the engine off. He said that he thought it might be the clutch pack. He said he thought the clutch pack was adjustable. He said if you had a service manual, it would probably explain how to do it. He said if you didn't have a service manual, you could probably get one through a case-ih dealer. They may have to order the manual because it is an older tractor. May take a couple weeks to actually have the manual in you hands. Make sure you order the service manual and not the owners manual. Hope this helps.

G'day you will have 2 thrust brgs in the clutch housing one for the pto and one for the main clutch if the pto clutch lever has been run in the disengaged position for a long time then the brg is prob shot you will need to lift the cover from the top of the clutch housing to see properly but you could be up for a clutch kit unless you are able to buy parts for the cover over there.

If you're interested, I had case pto fixed today. Mice had built a nest in bell housing and I THOUGHT I had cleaned it all out. Turned out enough junk had made it's way into pressure plate that prevented clutch from engaging. Mechanic showed up loaded for bear with every tool known to man in his truck and laughed when he cleaned it out better than I did, adjusted it a bit after we ran it a few times and charged me 20 bucks... Needless to say, I gave him more. Embarrassing but relieving too. Oh, and I have to replace a 1/4 bolt with a 5/16 or maybe 3/8 to take slack out of linkage to pto in rear since somebody put a smaller one in but I'm a happy camper. Thanks for the suggestions and help though. Wealth of knowledge around here.
