1987 Case IH 255
I have a 1987 Case IH 255 And the pto engages and disengages when the drive clutch does. I tried adjusting it per my manual but it wont disengage the drive seperately from the pto? Am I missing something or is the pto engagement messed up? I dont know much about it? This is my first tractor i have owned it for about 3 months. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appriciated.

Have you tried hooking anything to the pto to see if it might make it work the PTO clutch if it has such a beast? Did the previous owner have any problems with it that you know of? Are the fluid levels ok? I am not familiar with your Case at all but there are plenty of smart guys on here that are.

The fluids are good. I have my 5 foot erskine blower hooked to the pto. The previous owner didnt have any problems with it. There is a cable hooked to the clutch petal that is to work the pto engagement (atleast thats what the manual says. Thanks for the post treemonkey1000

Well shoot that's two strikes against what I thought.. Time for someone else to chime in with some wisdom as I am fresh out of ideas

Old ones were built that way. Don't know about your machine tho.

TractorData says a live clutch on your model is optional. If yours does not have it, it's behaving as it should. I don't get the cable function - do you think the machine disengages the PTO each time you declutch? Seems like a lot of working of the gears for no benefit?
I'm curious but not informed - you'll have to wait for someone who knows this rig.

It does have the optional live clutch. The one guy who I talked to said it also has an itching pedal? Now I'm really confused.

Do you mean an 'inching-pedal'? I believe that it was for 'inching' back to hook up a wagon, bailer, or other equipment. (But that was 40 years ago!) ~Scotty

The 255 did have the inching pedal option w/ the synchromesh trans. If you go to Messick's website and look under power train you can see the diagram for it. As far as adjusting the live clutch...following the manual's instructions is about the best advice I could give. Case IH 255 CASE IH TRACTOR

Speaking of reviving an old thread, I have just purchased what I think is a 1988 Case IH 255 with cab and a lot of options, including loader and power steering. All work well. On a 4' bush hog in heavy grass, though, it doesn't cut as well as my Bolens G174 does in middle gear on its pto. That's about 750 rpm. Its lower gear is only 450 rpm, so I have always used 2nd. The Kubota B7510 also doesn't do much of a job on this bush hog with its 540 rpm pto.

Today I wound the 255 up to 2500, put it in 1st 2nd range, and had at it. The tractor is impressive in muddy spots, for certain, but the bush hog doesn't seem to have the revs to do a decent job.

Now here comes the question: On the plate by my right foot is the on/off lever for the pto. It also mentions the mid mount pto, accessed by the same plate. But in bold lettering on the plate it says "To access 1150 rpm on rear pto, TURN OVER THE PLATE.
Has anybody been here before?
