I have a 395 that has been working fine until a few weeks ago. After doing some plowing I pulled out onto the road to go back to the barn. I took off in low range, third gear and once I got rolling good shifted to high range. As soon as I let off the clutch the tractor took off like it should but within a second or two acted like it had jumped out of gear. No forward in any gear. Reverse works fine. This does have forward/reverse so 8 forward/reverse gears. Every once in a while if you put it in gear and let off the clutch it will try to move forward but then stop. Once I have heard a high pitched noise from the transmission but it did not stay.
I am thinking that possibly the forward clutches in the shuttle clutch have given up but this happened all at once with no warning. I see on the parts diagrams the clutch pack has O'Rings...is it possible one of these is bad? I know from my luck it will not be this easy or inexpensive. I have removed the transmission cover but can't see anything that looks bad. The plunger in the IPTO seems to slide up and down real easy but that may be ok.
Any suggestions or ideas? I plan on stopping at a dealership tomorrow to see if they can give me any ideas. And if it is the shuttle clutch do I have to split the front and back or will it come out the front?
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Not familiar with the 395 but if it has the cascade gears like 674 through 885/895 they were famous for sticking between gears particularily if linkage was worn and shifting with glancing movements not square positive motions . I had a 674 that did it regularly but a tap in the right place on the linkage with a hammer always did the trick. Decades since i've been around them so cant remember exactly what i used to do without looking at it!

When you lift the clutch it would feel like you were about to pull away and feel like "load" then go tight and kind of scream and slip . Normally associated with higher houred tractors but often gear linkages are worn prematureley as the cascade boxes lended themselves niceley to loader work so many had been ex loader tractors .

Shifting range on the move is'nt a good idea anyway !

Thanks for the reply. I talked with the dealership and pretty much concluded that the fwd/rev clutch pack is the problem. Either a bad O'ring or the clutch disc themselves, possibly a cracked plate. No power shift, just a regular clutch and the shuttle which lets you go from fwd to rev with one lever.

Here is a photo of the clutch pack and fwd/rev IPTO:

On shifting on the move I would think it is better to shift to high range after you are moving rather than loading the clutch from a dead stop...........I may be wrong.

Only around 1500 hours on this machine. I bought it from the original owner and have owned it for about 5 years. From what I have found the 395 is not a common model but the transmission is similar to some of the other models that Case/IH made.

Thanks again.
