Castrol 30 wt Oil

Multi-weight oils are always better than single weight when it comes to initial lubrication at start up and also they are much easier on the starter as it makes the engine easier to turn over. There is simply no reason to use a single weight oil with todays engines as there is no cost or at least negligible cost difference and with multi-weight you get so many advantages over straight mineral oil.

Sometimes these non detergent single weight oils are used for break in oils on new engines as they want the engine components to "wear in" and the straight mineral oil allows that to happen faster. In these cases they are ok for use briefly and for small engines usually after 8-10 hours of operation before changing them to a multi-weight oil and in some cases multi-weight synthetic which is what my Ferris ZTR calls for and I use it in all my engines now.

What engine in your ferris ? My toro with Kawasaki calls for either 30 w or 10w 30 . I have a B&S engine on a tiller that calls for 30 W HD. I also have 2 generators that 1 calls for 30W HD 1 calls for either 30W or 10W30

I use Castrol single viscosity 30W in all of my older Briggs & Stratton air cooled engines, and since I live in a relatively warm climate area and all are used in warm/hot weather, I don't worry about low temperature starting. My arm is the starter.:D

I have the 691FS. It had some kind of breakin oil that required changing at 8 hours. It requires full synthetic SL rated oil 10W40 or 10W50 if temps were above 95F IIRC. Have to get out the book or just look at my oil I bought for it,Mobil1 was the only oil I could find at Wally world that had an SL rating on the bottle

I think just about all the old single cylinder lawnmower engines call for non-detergent 30W motor oil. The larger OHV engines on mowers and generators just about all call for a multi-grade synthetic oil now. My B&S (27HP)engine in my Craftsman ZTR 6000 mower calls for 10W40 with no mention of requiring synthetic but my Ferris specifically requires synthetic in the manual and the dealer even cautioned me that it requires full syn oil.

15w40 or a syn oil might be better for wear on startup.

Is straight 30 wt oil ok for winter use?

is this for your super A?

i think I'd run something else...

15w40 above 0 or 10w30 below 0

To my understanding multi viscosity oils are OK EXCEPT for two stroke Detroit diesel engines. Within minutes of a Detroit engine running with 15 weight engine oil it tears up the engine. The oil in a two stroke Detroit does not heat up as fast as in a 4 stroke engine. Detroit's use 40 weight in summer and 30 weight in extreme cold.
