I saw a 1958 977 cat in good condition except the treds are worn fat and some of the boldts are worn down but not loose. The hydrolic hoses are new and the engine runs well. It has a big bucket. Old paint job but not much rust.

What is it worth?

This is a close up of the track . Is there a cheap short term fix to the tread problem? Can I weld 5/8 x 1 inch flat to the tread to regrouse?

Cat 977... great machine. I have one. It's from 1965.

I'd say the one you are looking at is worth around $12000, though you might have to put some money into it.

You can weld new grouser bar to it if you have the time. I've got 6 963's and we weld on them from time to time. Once the pads get too thin, we end up replacing them. Not sure what the thing is worth, but they were quite a machine in their time. I've a 1990 963 that might have been worth 30-40US. It had something fly apart in the hydrostatics yesterday that may cost more than the darn thing is worth. Still debating what to do with it. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

they are an awsome machine, i had the fun of doing steering clutches and some other work to a 977 a couple years ago and when it was all done and running it was an absolutely amazingly powerfull machine. could move alot of dirt in a hurry

You need to have someone who is familiar with equipment look at it and show you how to check the pins, bushing, sprockets, rails, and rollers. If the under carriage is bad It is not worth much more than scrap. A new under carriage can be $10,000.

I bought a 977H (1964) at an auction a couple months back for $5700. The under carriage was good but the little things add up. Books $200 - 1" plate to make bucket edges $50 - missing broken bucket tooth root $200 - Bucket linkage bushings $100 - 2" rod to make New bucket pins -$50 new track frame bolts $32 - new filters $85 - Reupholster seat $90 - Final Drive gasket $15 - oil 160 qt. -
Bottom of the air cleaner $? - Emergency break linkage $? - High/low range linkage $? - New batteries $150 - 1 TRACK ROLLER $250 - having it huled home $450

Luckily I have a brother that has a shop , tools, and knowledge to help me work on it. If you had to PAY A DEALER!
