I figure I should start preparing for winter ahead of time this year and get a 3pt spreader. Is there anything I need to know about spreaders before getting one, other than making sure it's category 1? If I plan on using the spreader primarily for salt, do I need to get one with a hopper that is made of a specific metal that will be resistant to salt or anything? My first thought would be to get this:

King Kutter Seeder/Spreader, Model# S-500 | Category 1 Attachments | Northern Tool + Equipment

Thanks for any advice.

If you can find a unit that has a Polymer Hopper, you will be better off in the long run. 308 Stainless Steel is rust resisant to salt, but it is highly unlikely you will find a MANUFACTURED unit that uses SS .

One small nick in the paint on Mild Steel and the entire paint will be rusted off in 2 seasons of use.

But once the entire unit is a solid Rust Spreader you could use a Rust Inhibitor product like RustOleum Rust Reformer. That should seal the Metal.

RayCo-
I've used that KK or Cosmo brand Italian-made spreader to spread a mixture of ice-melter and sand for the last three winters. I just rinse it out well and let it dry in the spring sun at the end of the season. So far no problems with rust or corrosion. I also have the vinyl cover they make for it which may help. I think for the price (actually less than shown in your ad if bought locally) you can't beat it. Regards, Mike

Get a good spreader. I've bought the cheapies and been disappointed.
Talk to these guys. Herd Seeders. Herd Seeder - Seeders, Spreaders and Feeders (I think they are actually on this board occasionally)
That's all they do is seeders. HIGH quality stuff and the prices are very very reasonable.
I'm more than satisfied with mine.

We used a truck style tailgate spreader with 12V motor on a 3 pt. hitch for years for spreading salt in our parking lot. A PTO driven unit is also available. TSC or Northern Tool sells them.

I have used many spreaders over the years, being in the lawn business. I prefer the sitrex 3 pt. pto spreaders. They are easy to adjust & they last.

Same here, except I use one set up for receiver hitch and mount it on an adapter on my FEL ...because, I either have a blower or a blade on the back to clear the snow and with the blower on the 3ph, I am goin' backward and can spread sand at the same time ...one pass
