I've owned my 2042 for about 2 months, or 14 hours of mowing. Been dry here and I bought her after the start of the mowing season or I'd have more hours!

I read on here that the headlamp wire could short out to the exhaust shield. I decided to check mine and lo and behold, I found a problem waiting to strike at the most inopportuned moment. The left headlight wire was about 30% wore through the insulation. Ain't no tellin' what would have been left if this baby had shorted out!

I had opened my hood to see how many wires were connected to the battery to help someone else here out. Seems he had jumpstarted his machine and the PTO wouldn't work after that, or something like that... He had asked which wires were connected to the battery.

If I hadn't been poking around, I wouldn't have glanced up and noticed a brown spot on the wire to the headlights, and also seen the rub mark on the (gotta be hot!) heatshield for the exhaust.

I love my machine, but this is just another one of those things that helps ruin my expectations on how good a Cub Cadet should be...

I rotated the headlight socket so the wires would exit on the other side. Heck, I'd already took my headlights out anyway since I couldn't shut them off if I wanted to.

If you own a 2042, I would strongly suggest you look for this on your machine and avoid a shorted and potentially fried electrical harness!

Attached is a pic (I hope!) showing what could have ruined my day.

That’s what this forum is for, to get information like this from customers that own these types of machines (tractors). I’m glad that you caught problem before it shorted out, you
would have been very upset. I would not have know about wiring problem if I hadn’t been reading TBN. I re-routed my wire after reading this forum with only about 1 or 2 hours on
my GT2544. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
