Category 3 / PTO

Power Take Offs (PTOs) to operate Category 1 and Category 2 size implements are the same.

What about Category 3 PTOs?

~~~same size?

~~~same operating RPM? (540 RPM)

I should know this, but I do not.

pto speed and size offerings are more along the lines of tractor hp abilities and imp needs. 540 will always be the same 1.375 x 6 splines and is typically only used in lower hp instances. The next step up in hp requirements goes to small 1000 which will always be 1.375 x 21 spline. After that then it goes to large 1000 and it will always be 1.75 x 20 splines. Cat III tractors can be either small 1000 or large 1000 as well as the implements but probably leans to the small 1000 side as cat III is not a terribly large offering in the ag world. Once you get into cat IV, etc then we start to see just large 1000 or no pto/three point at all.

Cat 3 does not mean only 1000 rpm. Our 7720 Deere is Cat 3 and is either 1000 or 540, I believe by changing the drive shaft - the 1000 rpm shaft meshes with a different set of drive gears than the 540. Ours is only used on our 540 rpm baler so I don't know about changing it. Our Cat 2 M135GX Kubota is used on either a 1,000 rpm chopper or its 540 rpm backup so the tractor PTO output shafts get switched when necessary. The 540 chopper has a notice that the driveline is limited to 90 PTO HP so we need to run slower when using the backup chopper.
