After many weeks of comparisons I finally made my decsion and purchased a 2005 CC 1046. I had been trying to talk myself into a JD118 but when you put both these machines up against each other, the decision is quite simple. While both these machines are priced equally, I belive the quality of the CC1046 is better. The Vtwin Koehler commander is a smoother engine and offers less vibrations than the JD118. (also sounds a little meaner).
If you look real closeley at the CC you will notice alot of user features that the JD doesn't have. For instance something as simple as an adjustment on the tie rods on the front wheels that lets you make a simple adjustment if the mower
isn't tracking straight. The oil filter is right on the side of the engine, man is this an easy change. The Deck wash system on the 1046, there are two ports because of the 3 blades. You also no longer have to bypass the saftey circuit if you want to cut in reverse, its as simple as turning the key from the full position to one back and pressing a button, now you can mow in reverse.

All in all I think the CC 1000 series is a better choice for an entry level yard tractor.

I purchased the CC1046 from a local dealer not a big box store because of service alone. Buying from a dealer offers me free pick up and delivery for a year and the comfort of knowing the people.

I look forward to using this CC for a long time.

btw, can anyone suggest a nice wagon for the CC, nothing really big, just to make mulching easier on one acre

Cub offers some wagons, they are fairly inexpensive and seem to hold up fairly well.

Sounds like you got a nice lawn tractor.
Make sure you change your oil in the first 5 hours. Mine had "ship away" oil, whatever that is...
When you go to change your oil, grab your 7/8" hole saw and cut through the frame to attach the hose (you'll see others who have done it here, I have pics if you want). I did mine before I ever changed it and didn't get to experience the difficulties others had.
Check your tow-in. Mine was way out for some reason.
Have fun!

Congrats,
I have also just purchased the same mower. I love it. I looked at the Green ones too, but saw so much more for the money with the CC.
I would like to see some of those pics Rhoderman has of the oil drain hole. I have 12 hrs on my mower and am fixing to change the oil at 15 hrs. Also how much am I going to have to fork out for the stuff to do it with.
I hope you are as pleased as I am with the LT 1046. It really does have a good sound when it is running.

Hi Al...

I personally have a GT2550 with the Khoeler engine and the oil filter for mine ran me just around $10 from my CC dealer.

Al,
Here's a pic looking through the hole to the drain "plug". If you bore a hole through both pieces of metal as close to the top as you can without hitting the top portion of the frame it will work good. The back piece will be welded in place so you will have to break it loose and bend it out. If there is a lot of metal left, you will need to file it out with a round file. I used a mirror propped against the engine to check progress while drilling the hole. I used salmon oil to lube the hole saw, works great. The salmon oil is normally used for adding to the dogs' food to keep thier coats shiny.

Also, when you change the oil, be sure to get the filter good and tight. Mine was snug, but it dripped a little oil until I cranked it down good. Also, put the right rear wheel up on a block to tip the engine to the drain side before you drain it. All of the oil will come out better that way.

I would suggest changing the oil at 5 hours. Mine was pretty grungy at 10 hours. If you're at 15, don't sweat it too much, but get it changed soon...

Cheers!

Ok I'm going to be the party pooper here....I personally wouldnt drill through my frame in order to drain my oil.
I concur its a bad design from Cub on many of their models.
But simple surgical tubing eliminates the need to bore a hole in your frame. Many other ideas like tubing can be used. I feel it weakens the frame bottom line...

/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gifI'm with you ducat. Drilling through the frame and weakening it would be a no-no just to drain the oil. Some time we over react and create other problems. My .02 /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Well,
I went to look at the drain hole location on my mower. It is a 2005 LT 1046. It has the 23hp Kohler Command. I will not have to cut a hole in the frame. It is located right under the starter. I have attached a pic.

I just did the same thing as I had to do my first oil change.
I learned a valuable lesson:

The directions say to pop the drain cover. No problem.
They then say to attatch the provided hose and push in on the
drain plug while turning counterclockwise. Again no problem.
But then.... It says pull outward to release the oil.
What they fail to mention is that if you pull out with more than just a very slight tug, it'll pop off completely and you will experience the joy of watching your oil pour out on your barn floor. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Do NOT pull too hard on the oil drain.
Hope my experience helps you to avoid the cleanup I just went through! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
