Anyone using a CCM tiller on a subcut? I still have not made up my mind on what tiller to buy. I like the CCM's, they look heavy duty and well made. I am just concerned that they may be to much for a subcut. I have 20 pto hp and 680 lb 3 pt hitch capacity at 24" behind the links. I am leaning towards a Woods or a Befco but I like the weight of the CCM's and my perception that a CCM will do a better job on hardpan. I will be using the tiller to make a new garden or two and to till up some baseball infields.

Of the CCM models the CR-45 (45" 395lbs), MR-100 (34" 410lbs) and MR-120 (42" 440lbs). I also am considering a Woods GTC40 (40" 320lbs) and a Befco T30-134 (34" 297lbs) and T30-142 (42" 341lbs). The CCM's have 6 blades per flange. Is that to many blades per flange for a subcut with 20 pto hp? The Befco and Woods have 4 blades per flange.

Bottom line, I want a tiller that will do the job without straining the limits of my tractor if that's realistic. I like the weight of the CCM's. Will the additional weight make the job of breaking hardpan easier and will my tractor handle it? Or should I just go to one of the lighter weight Befco or Woods machines? Will the lighter weight tillers just bounce around on hardpan? I know I have asked several questions but I don't want to screw this purchase up and be disappointed.

I just bought, and am very happy with a Woods GTC52.
That said, I have all faith that the CCM tiller would serve you very well. Yes, the two extra blades will require more of your tractor, and will drag it down in hardpan, but it's doable. Just don't try to go too deep at one time. If you want full depth first pass, I'd say forget it, you won't do it most likely in hardpan with any of them.
The gear drive, from what I gather, requires less HP than the chain. The extra weight, in my opinion is always a help.
I have to say the Woods GTC is very well built and sturdy, and you wound't go wrong getting one. If you have 20 HP at the PTO you could easily use the 52" I bought as I have only 15.5 and my CK20 handles it amazingly.

I'm using the CCM MR-145 (49in till width) on a JD 4110 - 17hp at the PTO. It's my first year with it and the ground is too wet still to do 'alot' of tilling but the CCM has worked great so far thru our rock-filled clay soil. I can get full depth on one pass in most previously tilled gardens, on virgin ground it takes multiple passes - biting off a couple inches at a time. Either way I move at slow speed; the CCM, & my JD, don't complain at all.

Just for reference I run an older 48" Howard Rotovator on my 7610 (18 pto hp) and it works very well, even taking a full depth till in one pass on new ground (not hardpan). I'm not sure of the weight of this beast but it is "old school" and substantial.

CCM tillers quality/price is the best you can get around TN. Service is complete. I am very satisfied with them

I'm also using the Woods 52" on my JD 2210 (17hp PTO) and it works great. It weighs in at 400 lbs and the 52" width covers the width of the wheels. I wouldn't go any wider though and I believe heavier would be a good thing providing it's within the limits of your 3 pt.
