My CCm toplink got nicked when it was fully retracted. It nicked a metal support I had welded to hold a toolbox. It is not leaking.

Should I replace the hose? Is there any safety issues I should be concerned with, if I do not fix it right away? HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Can you post a picture of the nick? I have some nicked hoses but I didn't think they were bad enough to be of concern. But then again I have no real expertise in the matter.

If it's just the outer fabric jacket that is nicked, then it shouldn't be a problem. If the stainless steel braid is exposed, then tape it up with some good friction tape followed by electrical tape. If the stainless steel braid is damaged you best replace it before it blows out under pressure.

Get a digital camera. I've seen 'em as cheap as $25 now days. You will find a million uses for it, including getting help with problems. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words!!

Should be no problem. The outer layer is not what is holding in the pressure.

I agree, should be no major concern. I actually bent an adapter fitting going into the cylinder pretty good but it was not cracked. I've used it that way for over 2 years with no leaks, but I did change it earlier this Summer. My hoses have nicks and scratches on them too, but I don't see a problem with a nick in it. On the other hand, there is no substitute for brand new stuff, but then those hoses are pretty rugged and stand up to a lot of abuse.

If there are no broken wires in the high strength steel wire braid and the hose cross section was not crushed, you are totaly ok. If wire was broken and its a 2 layer braid reinforced hose you are still ok if its only a few strands. Just tape over it. If its a single braid hose with broken strands, or any hose that was crushed, I would replace it.

Thanks for all your comments. I'll let the nick go for now. It appears to only encompass the rubber and not the steel bands.

I'm 23 miles from town so add $50.00 in gas to that digital camera. Besides I'm a tecno-phobic when it comes to cameras.

Thanks,

Holy smoke! You use $50 of gas to drive 46 miles? What are you driving and who is getting rich selling you gasoline?;) :D

I'm glad to hear that your damage is only cosmetic. The rubber on the outside of the hose is really protection for things rubbing against the hose braid and from things that might damage the braid. CCM sells quality two-braid hoses so failure should not be expected, but if the rubber is cut, taping it will prevent additional deterioration due to moisture getting under the rubber.

I wouldn't be worrying about the nick, I would be more concerned about the leak in your gas tank.....:) If gas is $4.00 a gallon / $50 = 12.5 gallons 46 miles /12.5 gallons = 3.68 MPG, that's pretty serious. :)
