Pie pans work good for the top of post, hold up well unless you have a nosy horse.

Yep. The old pie pan, or even a 'glop' of cement, trick will work. There's also cutting squares of tin and nailing down the corners.

But, as you've said, I've got nosy horses (who, fortunately don't windsuck). I've only lost the one plastic cap over the past 3 years and, because I purchased 10 extra ones, it was easily replaced. One screw down the centre and 'job done'.

For square posts, I have cut squares from leftover composite decking, routered the edges to make it look finished, and fastened it to the top with a single screw.
