Where are some good/legal places to attach chain to my TC40D SS to secure, FEL, and BH to my 16' 10K# trailer? I've been reading the Trailering discussions and there are various suggestions, none for tractors with SS and I'm concerned about stressing the front axle and also scuffing the paint by chain travel when tightening up. Anybody use those nifty holes under the front folding fender for shackles or perhaps the subframe attachment arms? How bout the rear? I'm running 4: 10' 3/8" grade 100 8,800#wl chains crossing underneath front and rear with 4: 15,000# alloy steel ratchet binders as well as 2 lower grade chains one FEL one BH with a lever binder on each. Anybody been thru a DOT road check know what their looking for?

I chain through the front bumper/bracket used for front weights be it supersteer or not. On the rear I wrap the chains around the rear axle. To be DOT compliant it needs to be Grade 70 chain.

As far as I know, everything needs to be Grade 70, binders and all.

Thanks Andy. I got grade 100 chain for its' strength. 3/8" grade 100 has a working load limit (wll.) of 8,800 lbs.; more than adequate for the 5000 to 6000 lbs of tractor and attachments I'm putting on the trailer. Using 3/8" grade 70 chain would only give 6,600 lbs wll. The binders are 15,000 lb. wll. only because they're the only ones rated for the grade 100 chain. I sure hope DOT won't object. When I sock up the chains with these beefy alloy ratchet binders they twang!

Be careful there. It's very easy to bend or break something with good binders. I've seen it happen a time or 2. ;)

My dealer left the big brass colored tie down ring on my '29. Some take them off. Maybe you could find some at the dealership for a good price and attach them to your tractor at strategic locations. Then you can run the chain through them without worrying about your paint or axles.

Thanks, rings would be great! As for over tightening the alloy binders i'm only guessing when I ratchet them down. I watch the chain links they grab for distortion and listen for anything cracking or snapping. The max tightening travel is only about 8" on the binder, but there's no lever to snap back at me with ratchet type. Wouldn't it be nice if there were some sort of in-line tensiometer one could use to monitor each chain.

My dealer told me they were told by New Holland to take them off before sale. You may be able to talk them out of the old ones they took off, I did and it works very well. The holes are already drilled to fit the ring perfectly because that is how they shipped it to the dealer. I use a latching hook and a cut to length grade 70 chain that snaps in the ring. After snapping it in the ring it can't fall off while I am placing the trailer end of the chain in the load binder. Now if I could mount some of those rings on the back side it would be perfect.
