Anyone suggest an appropriate lubricant for the chain drive on SB series Frontier Snowblowers?

Motorcycle chain lube works in the spray can form, but if you want something that is tough use industrial crane cable lube. It has moly and will not come off, just messy. Or plain old oil from a can every time you run the blower.

I use motorcycle chain lube. It has been great. Doesn't fly off.

Hi,
Thanks for the response on the chain lubricant. I've now tried some motorcycle lube as you suggested as well as some spray lithium grease. Both seem to work well. The lithium, since its white, doesn't look quite so "dirty".

On another subject, since you use a snowblower as I do (except mine is mounted to the rear PTO), does your driveline to the PTO operate within a plastic shield (Frontier brand)? If so, have you disassembled yours to service the bearings, grease fittings, etc.? I'm in the process of doing just that but can't find a reference on how to remove those plastic shields. If you happen to know, I'd love to get clued in so I can finish my maintenance routine.

Thanks,

The driveline on my Frontier SB1164 does operate within a plastic shield. For safety, the plastic shield isn't designed to be removed. Maintenance is easier if you disconnect from tractor first. That will allow you to turn the driveline by hand so you see the grease zerks on the universal joints. Operator's manual says:

Driveline - 8 hours - Grease each universal joint. Separate the sliding parts and cover each one of them with grease.
Driveline - 16 hours - Oil the connections.
Drive Shaft - 24 hours of operation - Grease fitting on shear plate.

For chains I perfer the loc-tite aersol chain lube. It kinda foams when you spray it too. It penetrates well into the rollers of the chain.

If like mine, you have white plastic strips at the 'bell' ends.
Using a small flat screw driver slip it under the protruding white knobby end and pull out with a pair of vice grips.
There is a kinda lump or knob on the strip that 'clicks' into a slot.
At that point you can slip the tube back giving access to the U-joints.
I wipe clean and hand grease my shafts B4 re-assembly.
Lots of crud gets in there.

My drive shaft is a square bar with a U-joint on one end. I grease the u-joint with the shaft on the table and grease the square shaft end by hand. I know that the plastic protector slides on the shaft but have not taken it off.
