And guys, the chaps were cheaper than the emergency room visit by $20 and one of my sick days from work!

Ouch! Wow, you are lucky. I am glad it wasn't any worse.

I hope the pic came thru, hard to do from my phone.... Anyway this is what happens when you don't wear chaps. This chainsaw was at idle and the blade was still turning, I didn't know it until it was to late!! I was lucky!! No bone no tendons..... cut my jeans open 5-6" and my cap knee cap around 1 1/2"....

The only good thing is that I was able to drive myself to the hospital and I had them stitch my knee bent so I could climb my treestand the following weekend!

That is exactly what my knee looked like TWICE yeah I know pretty dumb to do it 2 times well I got my left thigh once too even dumber.

I also have chaps I dont always wear them when working around the yard but I always have them with when I go out to the woods and cut.

Its a slow and painful recovery being on a joint so dont over do it!

If anyone wants to see what happens when a pair of chaps and a chainsaw meet go to Labonville.com and they have a eye opening couple of videos or they did at one time thats the brand of chaps I bought and mine are full wraps. :)

yep.. mine are full as well, and go past the knee, and cover the waist and front part of your legs just below the waist, then full leg from inseam down.. and yes.. covers inseam fully.. :)

Yea, well, real men like me don't need no sissy chaps and...

Never mind. I've got the helmet/shield/ear protector thing, chaps, and gloves.

I wear cheapy leather gloves for most outside work, but I really like the dedicated chainsaw gloves for sawing - they have a cushioned palm, which at least for me, effectively dampens the vibrations, and they have an elastic cuff, so the saw chips don't end up inside the glove. They are also tight enough of a fit so that I can manipulate the saw controls easily.
I have not yet found the chaps useful for stopping a saw chain. I don't plan to, either, but that's the point. But, they are very nice for wading through brambles.

Glad to hear you appreciate the gear. Actually it has been rather cool in the mornings at my place, so the chaps have help keep me warm.

the good chaps and gloves are kevlar lines ad the fibre's really do a good job of binding and draining offenergy from a moving piece of metal.

I just got sawyers certificate from the USFS to do bucking and limbing; 2 day class. We covered a lot of stuff in those two days with safety the main topic. I bought a new pair of USFS approved chaps and helmet so I could comply with the new regulations. Chaps are not all the same as I found out in the class and the new ones must be labeled with Spec. 6170-4F. The head sawyer said he had just gone around and collected all the chaps at their work station and got rid of them and replaced them with the new spec chaps. Seem like a waste to get rid of chaps that were good but that is the way it is I guess. I now wear mine all the time after hearing the horror stories. The one rule I still break at home and the farm is cutting alone. I know I should not do but I do take extra care and time when alone.
