I've been using my 4210 drawbar hitch and a chain to pull stones and tree trunks around and got tired of unhooking the chain from the clevis after every use, and storing it in either the FEL bucket or on the platform. I had this old Craftsman poly GTO toolbox with a broken latch, and the lower section is 15 inches long and the width and height are 7 1/2 inches. With the drawbar fully extended this size box fits EXACTLY in the space below the PTO shaft and the holes in the bar are ideal for securing the toolbox. With a 1/2 plywood floor in the bottom of the box it still holds 50 to 75 feet of 3/8 chain and I don't have to waste time unhooking the chain after every pull.

Thanks for the tip. Seems like a good one, and will look into that as a fix for carrying chain.

I'm with Stuart, post a photo. It sounds like a good answer to the problem. I've lost a couple of chains because I threw them into the FEL and forgot they were there. One I never saw again, I think I buried it, the second one I "found" with the bush hog.

I'd like to see a pic also. I wonder if one of those surplus ammo boxes would work.

I use a tall .50 caliber surplus ammo box to store my chains and such. A normal size will probably work for a short logging chain but the tall ones can hold several chains and clevis's. You can get them from Cheaper than Dirt.

Sounds like a great solution. Where do you have the ammo box mounted and how?

I do not have it mounted. I carry it along when needed. It is kinda large. I suppose you could drill a couple of holes or weld a bracket and fasten it to the tractor where ever space permits. Welding is probably better since it will keep the box waterproof.

I would have included a photo but I lent my digital camera to my nephew for spring break and he is in Florida right now...

I'm not sure if the idea would work on other tractors which is why I posted it in the JD forum, I will get a pic posted as soon as I can.
