Chains Chains for large R4s on 3520

My 3520 has the larger R4s and I am in the market for some snow chains. I think I read somewhere that the manual says "no chains" for these tires. Why would this be? Is it a clearance issue? My dealer has indicated that chains would be fine, and recommended doing the rear tires only. Does anyone on this forum have experiance with this matter?

My driveway is steep, and since I had not yet completed the drainage work before the ground froze, it is also icy. I can always get up it, but I cannot always plow uphill. I have also had a few uncontrolled slides until I get off into deep snow. Anyway, it seems that rear chains would really help. It would also help me counter the plow pushing the front end sideways if my steering brakes were more effective.

The warning against tires on both my old 4300 and the 4520 is no chains on front. I think it is more an interference issue with the steering gear than anything.

I have a set of "skidder" chains for the 4520. These were home made with 3/8 large link binder chain. I do not doubt that you can find them factory made by someone.

Yep, the manual does indeed say no chains on the larger R4s. The manual says one can put chains on the smaller R4s, which makes me conclude its just a clearance thing.

I have tire chains on front and rear of my 4410, front are no problem at all and rear are very close, need to keep very tight. Try tirechain.com they have almost ant size or style, from garden tractors to skidders. Great pricing and cheap shipping. I have purchased 3 different sets from them. JF

I've been toying with the idea of front only chains for my 4310 since I do need a little extra traction on three steep driveways that do get packed ice. well we got about 10" of snow today and it didn't take long to pack it down in some places making it very slick, forcing me to hit the hills at high speed to get up them.
So I put together some old chain pieces I had and tried it out, made all the difference, I went right to a spot that I had lost all traction earlier and had to point down hill to get out of it, well with the chains I was pushing snow uphill, the chains are now staying on for the winter!!!
The R-4's are close to the fenders, also I hear you may have to flip the wheels to get the clearance you need in the rear, the front right side will touch the steer cylinder if I cut the wheel extreme right, I'm pretty sure I can avoid doing any damage just by being careful, these chains are every 4th link cross so they really don't change diameter as most of the cross links fall into the lugs but still provide good traction.
The fronts are very easy to install by raising tires off the ground with the loader bucket. These chains are old and tired and a little narrow but their staying on till they fall off and then I'll replace them for sure, they seem to be just what I've been lacking.
Rear chains would turn a CUT into a bulldozer and would be a necessity in harsh environments.

I have a 3720 with the large R4's. I have chains on all 4 tires bought at tirechainscom. I did switch my rear wheels around which gives about 3/4" extra clearance which you definitely need. I now would not be without all 4 wheels chained.
