CHAINS.... Got one set of 2 link chains... Have not put them on. They are an experiment...

I have some hillside I'd like to mow, its not turf, so its soft. While the tractor does well with the ROUGH CUT and duals, it could do better....

So has anyone used them with DUALs?

1. I'm guessing they are a tight fit between the tires and I'm concerned that they may well damage the sidewalls...

2. I'd like to install them on the inner wheels, but I'm not sure about getting "rubber bands" on them to tension them.

3. Looks like they are going on the outer wheels and I hoping they don't stress the axles much....

4. Also for one set I'm going to try them on the front first..

Any thoughts and or experiences?

Well, you could remove the outers for the install. It is really easy, except our dealer's mechanic uses a "BF" pipe wrench to really turn the outer wheel flange into the inner wheel flange. Says he does not want them coming off in use. ???? So, the first time is booger. I used a 16" pipe wrench and cheater pipe to get mine free. When you install, grease the threads and simply turn the outer wheel in until hand snug. The center bolt will serve to keep them from coming off in use. I would try them on the inner tires. If you are driving up this slope and then backing down, I suggest the rear to get the chains.

Have you considered using winter grade windshield washer fluid in rears or all 8? You gain about 50# per tire without stressing the frame or bearings, the weight is onto the floor of the tires/ground. About 7 gallons per tire, often on sale for less than 2 bucks per gallon. DO NOT use summer grade, it will freeze in our area!

Bought a set of chains.... Honestly I don't see these particular chains working. Was going to try them on outside front wheels on some softer slopes, but there really isn't enough clearance BETWEEN the wheels to use them in my opinion. If you put them on the inside front wheels (even with single tires) they are going to be VERY close to the frame...... So they are going to sit on the shelf.

Well, I guess that saves me from shopping for a pair or two. My problem is when crossing slopes near 30 degrees, the downhill outer ATV tire cuts the turf and rolls it over, leaving a bare trench behind. I never had that happen on other machines with turf tires.
