Chainsaw Bar Oil ??

Like the op was told, I too use "used" engine, hydraulic, gear and even regular bar oil. I sawed professionally for years and only thing i found used oil not up to was falling large stressed, dying timber where the pitch would gum up the bar/chain faster than with bar oil. I had my chain oiler adjusted to run out of oil 'bout the same time the saw started running out of gas.

Chains would stretch the same with used oil and in COLD winter weather, used oil poured easier than the gorilla snot that regular bar oil would turn into. Winter grade of bar oil looks a lot like new engine oil or hydraulic oil...... Hmmmm

As far as polluting the environment with used oil, ever see the color of the water in the puddles of wal-mart, malls, grocery stores and gas stations or any parking lot? Just what makes that funky colored water...... Hmmmmm
Sounds like all you need is a hacksaw and elbow grease..............We cut real trees where I'm from.

Still gotta luv the earlier comment from someone else also "just learn how to file your saw".
I won second place in a logging competition................but I'll practice my filing and chain tightening technique:thumbsup:

I think that I would use motor oil if I had a saw that was on it's last legs or a Poulan. I did use it in my old McCulloch 10/10. That thing was a beast. I bought it for used for $75 and cut probably 70 cords with it and sold it for $75. It's probably still running 25 years later. As much cutting as I do I don't want the bars and chain heating up and wearing out any faster than necessary. So I buy regular bar oil. Another thing is clean the channel and oil hole in the bar often.

My Gpa was a Norweigan logger that came over here from the old country n moved into the hills of the coast range of Oregon and whipsawed logged for years. He went to town very infrequently but on one trip he went into the hardware store and the salesman somehow convinced him he needed this newfangled power saw as it would triple his production.

Gpa had had a couple of good nights of poker so went ahead and bought the saw but it didn't work very well for him. A week later he goes back to town disgusted throws the saw down on the counter and wants his money back.
He said"dis saa don cut as fas as my hansaa"

The salesman picks it up and it is kinda dull so he shows gpa how to sharpen it and said to keep it sharp and see how it works.

A week later he is back in town still disgusted takes the saw back and wants his money back, "better but sthll no gut"he says.

The salesman picks it up, yup nice n sharp, so he starts it up.......

"Wuts dat noise??" says gpa.

:laughing::laughing::laughing:

hack saw and some elbo grease.......funny, interesting theory Don87.

Four and a half foot pondarosa pine I cut while logging a park. Bar/chain lube was used 76 brand 15-40 engine oil

Four foot engleman spruce in the grapple was fell while salvage logging. Bar/chain lube mix of hyd. oil and used engine oil. Yes I operate the 648 G-III in the picture

Dead fur trees I fell for firewood, skid and loaded with my 790. Not four foot threw, but I left the hacksaw home and used the 288 husky, bar lubed with good 'ol used gear and engine oil.

Sharp chains have more effect on bar heat, dull chain means more force required from ape operating the saw... = hotter the bar, more stretch of the hot chain. Sharp chain less the force/skill needed from operator to cut quick and straight with little friction.

I've never tried hydraulic oil, just the used motor oil once.
My chains are sharp enough to slice a finger in short order.

I'll still stick with bar oil.

Dad still has a 10/10. That was bach when they actually made REAL saws.

They went by the wayside. Like poulan. Even some of poulans older saws were good pro grade saws. They even had a couple of models made by Sachs Dolmar, and then by husqvarna.
