Chainsaw Gas

Used nothing but avgas for over 15 years in all small gas engines and antique tractors here. Everybody around here does. End of problems period. Everything starts instantly in the spring, nothing in it to varnish your carbs either. Worth every penny.

Your comments were interesting ,and for the most part correct . I do, however ,find that My saws are sensitive to fuel quality , octane ,and oil mix . So , I try to keep everything as consistent as possible . In fact My 044 seems to be the most sensitive . I've heard it doing the frying egg sound on cheap gas once ( claimed 89 octane ) . I now stick with Shell and BP premium .

My 044 is probably the least temperamental saw I have... I find the smaller ones take more tweaking depending on ambient temperature, usually. The colder and more dense the air, the more fuel they require to work "just right". I can't help myself, if it's not working perfectly I get the screwdriver out.

"If I could get my hands on Avgas 100LL , I would probably run it with just about 5 % more oil to the mix to compensate and counteract any heating issues, especially with chainsaws, as they have to run wide open and harder than most other 2 cycle stuff I may have."

Just something to consider: If you increase the oil content of your mix you have decreased the amount of gasoline available to be mixed with air, resulting in a leaner fuel/air mix and increasing the risk of overheating. In the real world a 5% increase in oil isn't going to cause a problem, but, if you're using a good quality oil at 50-1, this is a case where more isn't better. Of course, you could adjust carb jetting to compensate for the leaner mix.

BTW: avgas does has higher octane than automotive gas, plus it is more resistant to vapor lock and contains lead (TEL). 100LL avgas sells for between $4 (self serv) and $5 (full serv) in New Hampshire, if you can find a source for non-aircraft use.
