Hoping I have this thread in the right section.
I have a lightly used Stihl 290 Farm Boss. I tend to take good care of my gear, I worked in the trades for awhile. About 8 years ago, I stored the saw at an odd angle and, in the Spring, I found it was hydrolocked with oil in the crankcase. I opened the saw up some and let it sit in a drain pan for months, Eventually it drained, started and ran well.
Last Fall I put the saw on a shelf in it's standard stance. I've found that it is locked up once more. I can barely pull the starting cord over one revolution. I have also since forgotten the particulars as to how I had it situated to drain for the first fix.

If anyone has some insight to a possible repiar or procedure, I'd be much appreciative.

Yea, what oil?

I have seen filling them up in the cold, with cold gas then storing in a heated building force premix through the carb and into the crank case

Empty the gas & oil before storage.

Why empty the oil?

And what do you consider "storage"? Mine are used infrequently but (except for the 088) usually get cranked about once every two to three months.

Sorry about the delay in posting. If anyone is interested, the follow up story and answers to other questions.

When I store my saws I like to leave them standing on the case bottom. In my prior situation, the 290 was stored on an angle or shifted to be stored on it's side. I believe it hydro locked with gas mix. Pulling the plug cleared the combustion chamber but not the crankcase.

In the current situation, I threw in the towel and took it into a local service center. They replaced a cracked plug and all is well.
