Does anyone else have the problem of chipper chute clogging? What a pain to clear the clog. Is it me, or are chipper chutes always clogging for you all?

Probably one of two things causing your problem. One, your RPMs are too low, speed it up, or two, you are feeding too much small stuff with needles and leaves. Slow down the input.
Why am I so sure about this? Well, experience is a great teacher.

I agree with welding, when you feed limbs with real small stuff (like alot of leaves)....... break it up and feed it a good sized limb or two in between. Feeding it a larger limb will tend to keep the chute clear since the larger, heavier chips will tend to knock the little stuff out and keep the chute clear. I've never found it to be a huge problem...... but it definitely happens to me, especially with pine needles.

So, this happens with all types and not a Champion chipper problem? I just want to make sure I didn't buy an expensive lame chipper.

I have a really nice Vermeer chipper that if you stuff too much evergreen type branches with all of the needles on it will do that. So I save some of the thicker branches and let the chipper drag that and the fluffy stuff in. Or I just use the thicker branches to stuff the fluff in there. If you start getting into the 9"-18" chippers not so much of a problem.

This happened to me with my Wallenstein BX42. I was amazed at how easy it was to clog up with dry willow leaves. I didn't seem to have the problem with green leaves off of other types of trees, but the thin little willow branches and leaves would clog it up almost instantly.

I wound up having to use my 8 hp Craftsman chipper/shredder to do the willow branches. I agree that alternating bigger stuff with the little stuff helps alot.

The air velocity and volume to drive debris out of the chute (at least on my Morbark disk chipper) is a function of the disk RPM, and the size/number of the little air paddles on the back of the disk. On mine, these are just sections of about 3x3 angle iron bolted to the disk. If the Champion uses a similar simple design, perhaps one or more of your paddles is bent or missing?

I've had every shredder plug up with green or wet material if this is all you feed it. Have used a little electric Black & Decker, TroyBilt Tomahawk, MacKissic no chipper and MacKissic chipper/shredder. I always keep some limbs to feed when some clogging of the outlet screen is occurring. Dry limbs will usually break up any clogs.

About the worst clogs was when I dropped several loaves of stale bread from the Food Bank through the Mac. It didn't stop it, but I think that I still have some dried up bread in the corners of the machine.

I'm pretty curious about what led up to putting loaves of bread through the chipper.
About the original question, my chipper has seldom clogged but the worst thing for me are small green willow twigs. The twig "breaker" just folds these and they pop open in the chute and plug it solid. I found a new home for that willow so that might be the end of the problem for me:D
