I have an MTD chipper shredder w/ 10 HP BS engine. Compression is too great for easy pull start, so would like to modify power input to PTO on my Ford 1210. Two main issues--BS motor is 3600 RPM, PTO is 400-540, and PTO turns opposite direction of BS motor. Ideally I need a 6:1 gear reduction (increase) box that also changes direction of rotation. Somebody out there must have tried this. Would like to hear from anyone with recommendations.

I'm no mechanic, but what about installing a starter via DC or AC? It might be easier to do or even less expensive.
Cheers,
Mike

The motor runs fine when I can get it started, so an electric start would be a good solution, but I haven't a clue of how to add a starter to an engine that currently has a pull cord.

Makes no sense.

You will spend more $ in the gearbox conversion, unless you possess extraordinary machinist skills, than the chipper is worth.

Either buy a starter for the Briggs or a purpose built tractor powered chipper.

Anything powered by a 10 hp gas engine is a toy and the tractor will break it.

Starters are available for most BS engines. You will most likely need the model and serial number of the engine. It is probably a simple bolt on installation, but there are some engines without teeth on the flywheel, so you might need a new flywheel as well. I htink Northern Tool sells starters, and most any small engine repair shop can get them. An internet search will turn up plenty of choices.

You should price out a pto 3200rpm gear box.. i bet you will gain a clue on how to install electric start or just pull harder.

What kind of brush are you chipping with a 10hp chipper? Bushes

What Dave M7040 says - ++. Otherwise - you are following a path towards large headaches.

I don't chip any serious woody material--I burn it after cutting out anything useful for firewood. I would use the shredder function more than the chipper to prepare material for my compost pile. I will certainly investigate the electric starter option, but the strongest advantage to a PTO powered unit is its ease of transport, and ability to regulate RPM. I agree that the unit is a toy and can be easily broken, so I need to be careful

I would also pass on the conversion to PTO. Fairly complicated and expensive, not to mention you would most likely destroy the chipper due to the tractor's torque.
