The ones on my JD 2030 screw on/off. I replaced them just to make the tractor look better.

On my open station (where the main shifter is smack in the middle of the floor between my feet), I tend to rip the shift boot getting on and off the tractor. Replaced it a few times already actually. The tractors reside inside the barn when not in use but a torn shift boot exposes the top of the gearbox to the ingress of rain and debris so it's a good idea to replace it if torn. On my cab unit, it don't matter as the main shift is mounted high up on the right side and covered by the right side console.
