Hi TBN'er,

I'm about to take off the Hydraulic Surge Brakes and install an Electric Brake system. It's on a two axle (3,500 each) equipment hauler. I have a couple questions and would also appreciate any additional tips. The trailer wasn't used all that much in the 15 years that I have owned it.

1. Do I remove all the hydraulic lines and close out the master cylinder some way?

2. Do the hubs need to be sanded a bit where the magnets make contact?

3. Any additional tips? I've already bought everything to do the job........I think.

Thanks,
Mike

I have a trailer with surge brakes and I just repaired the master cylinder. I believe if I changed mine over I would replace the hitch or weld it because it will have a lot of unnecessary movement with no hydraulics to hold it back.

Yes, you must replace the hitch and clean up the hubs.

It's done. Changed to electric. Was quite a job for this old man. Spent about a month getting it done....a good bit sliding in/out over gravel. ....ouch. I'm proud of the job. The actuator was immobilized with some commercial guy line cable like used for high line electric guy cables. Might get it welded at a later date. The Prodigy P2 controller, a BreakAway kit, and various 10 gauge wires and butt connectors, lots of 3M Professional tape, some loom, zip ties, lots of head scratching, new 6 pole truck and trailer connectors, bearings and new seals serviced and "Voila". ......it works great on my dual axle (6,000 lb each), 12 inch shoes, equipment hauler. The Redi-Haul Manufacturer (Fairmount, MN) personnel were quite helpful over the phone and I also used some video and parts from e-trailer.
Cheers,
Mike

I replaced the surge brakes on my dump trailer 2 yrs ago ? I haven't done any thing to my pintle hitch coupler. Just left it . There is a little slack. I just never think about welding it up. I like the electric brakes waaaaaaaaay better than the surge
