History:
Had to charge the battery after use so I bought a new voltage regulator, but that didn't fix the problem.
Replaced stator and flywheel shear that broke when taking off the flywheel, charged battery, tractor started and ran fine.
Next day, today, tractor won't start. Kept trying and it backfired. Removed the flywheel and checked the stator- it's in tight and it looks great.
Help!

Since I presume this has electronic ignition system are you getting spark to the plug? It's possible while removing the flywheel you changed the air gap for the ignition trigger assembly. Do you have a manual or know what this is supposed to be set at?

Which engine brand and size? Horizontal or vertical shaft? Mostly just curious.
Assume the key was not sheared the second time flywheel was removed. ??

It might help if we knew what tractor you have and what engine is in it.

Also I have no idea what a flywheel shear is. Please explain. Provide photo if possible.

Shear key as in flywheel shear key, is what keeps the flywheel timing static.

This winter had a B&S engine that backfired and found flywheel key sheared.. so thought that was the cause and problem. Put new key in and backfired again.. new key was sheared again.
Finally found the root of the problem.. that a very small spring that held the compression release was broken. This fixed, and solved the problem. Now admit this was a single cyl. 9 hp, but may be something to consider.
You didn't say if the second time removing the flywheel, that the key was not sheared.

Agree with beenthere, I am almost certain that the flywheel is not in the correct rotational position.

Question is, why was the key sheared in the first place?

Did the mower blades his a solid object?
