Last night I drained the oil for the 455 by the book. I put 3 quarts back in as the manual states. But afterwards, I put the old oil from my oil bucket into a empty 1 gallon oil jug, it overflowed by about 1/2 a quart. That's almost 5 quarts of oil. The book specifically states to put in 3 quarts. Am I missing something? Should I run it tonight and check to stick and add if needed or worry about how much was in there.
P.S. I was not mine the last time the oil change was done. It must have been a while. I came out like thick syrup.

Thanks
Richard

I think it only takes around 3.XX qts +/-. It should also not come out like thick syrup. At least this is what I remember when I had my 1994 455.

I agree. It was probably a long time sice the last owner had it changed. Either way my question is how did almost 5 quarts come out? Should I be concerned with how much there was?

Doesn't the dipstick work?

Seems it would have been telling you the 'old' oil level as well as the 'new' oil level, and lead you to an answer to your question. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Did it show 'overfull' before you drained it?

Did it show 'underfull' after you put new oil in?

The book may cover the 425 and 445 tractors (they are gas, not diesel) as well which don't take as much oil in the crankcase, I don't believe.

I follow what I read on the dipstick, but then maybe I'm a dipstick type of guy. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Actually the stick read a tad over full before, but the oil was so thick it wouldn't even drip off the stick. So after it was changed, the stick showed a tad below the full mark. I was just looking for comments on the excess of oil I have.

Monitor the dipstick as you continue using it and see if there is an increase in the level. If so, you may have a problem with raw diesel getting into the crankcase, or antifreeze. The dipstick is your key to monitoring the oil level and what is happening. IMO
Wish you luck figuring it out. With oil that thick as you describe, there may be some serious problems with the engine now.
