Tires Changing a flat front tire w/o a jack is cool

What about the old block of wood etc wedged between the axle and frame/front bracket to keep the flat tire off the ground trick, allowing you to drive on just the one good tire, I've never done it but I heard the old timers talk about it.
Having the front loader would make it easier than the long log used for a lever to raise the flat side up, like they did back in the day.
