Hello to All,

I am getting the seals changed in my Kubota LA1001 loader cylinders...I did one of the upper cylinders myself, so this time is the other one and the 2 bucket ones.

When re-installing the cylinders, how much hydraulic fluid is required, if any, to replace what was lost? The dip stick is not really calibrated enough to specify minimal losses.

Finally, after installing the cylinders and then starting, is there a one-way valve or something that automatically purge the air from the system?

Thank you very much,
tstex

An open center hydraulic system self purges air if you cycle the cylinders a few times.

Thanks Fallon...I will life up and down the front-end-loader up a couple of times..

The entire hydraulic systems takes 41.5 qts...so if I change out 3 cylinders, how much hydraulic fluid should I add? Thank you.

Just cycle it a few times then check the dip stick and top it off. Should not take much.

Thanks Dave...

As mentioned, the hydraulic dipstick right, in front of the lower seat area, is pretty broad-ranged w respect to fluid levels. I'll target for the fluid level to end up in the middle of the dip sticks upper and lower limits. However, when I measure it both before and after adding hydraulic fluid, is there a certain amt of time it takes before I should re-measure after I turn her off?

Also, I will assume the front-end-loader should be resting on the ground unless noted otherwise.

Thanks again,
tstex

Lift the loader all the way up, check the dipstick. Lower it, check the dipstick. You just rased the level in your sump the size of the rods on the loader cylinders, probably a few quarts. You can figure out ballpark how much that raises the level. And given how much it goes up & down based on cylinder position, it's not an exact science. As long as it isn't way low or way high you'll be fine.

Here's an update.

Got all cylinders installed, then started her up and let her run awhile per op manual. I read the dipstick and filled as to halfway mark. Raised and lowered, then added more [gradually] and kept checking dipstick until it was again at halfway mark. I then ran her moving all aspects of the hydraulics, front and back w shredder, then let her set for 10-15 while I changed the fuel filter and cleaned the sediment bowl. Before starting her, I checked level again and it wa dead center...after working her hard the next time, I'll check the level again to make sure we are good to go.

Thanks again for everyone's help and be safe,
tstex

I thought I remember reading that turning the steering lock to lock a few times would also serve to purge air from the system. I an old guy so my forgetery might be off.

An open center hydraulic system (on 99% of SCUT & CUTs) is always pumping at full GPM. It will purge that loop in seconds if you have a full sump. You need to operate valves (or steering wheel) to purge out each impliment or the steering circuit.

What caused the original seals to leak? I confess that in 50 years of tractoring I've never yet replaced a cylinder seal.
