I've never changed the fuel filter on a tractor before, and the filter on my 4047 is due. Are the instructions in the manual adequate, or are there any tips that would be helpful to add? Thanks in advance.

It depends on the type of fuel filter. If inline then apply clamping pressure on each side if rubber hoses then unclamp and install the new filter.
If the Racor type (glass bowl and paper filter) same process. If metal pipes I use wooden golf tees to plug the lines while changing.

I'm doing this from memory here since it's been a while since I did the fuel filter on my 3039; I'll assume that your filter is the same. It's a little glass bowl that will unscrew. Before you unscrew it, look ahead of the filter at the base of the center column and notice a plastic removable plate that's maybe 4 inches square. Remove the plate to get access to the fuel hose and then pinch that closed --- I used a rag and small vice grip pliers. Do the same with a hose that feeds into the top of the filter. Now unscrew the bowl and remove it. The filter fits tightly in the bowl ---- find a pick of some kind to help pick the filter out of the bowl. Rinse out the bowl with a little diesel and then install new filter; screw it back on a few threads and then remove your clamps allowing the bowl to refill ---- tighten the bowl fully once it has filled. You're done -----
