This may be duplicate information. There was a thread (that I can't find now) about changing filters whie not changing the Hyd Fluid.

One guy said he lost a lot of fluid, like a gallon or more. And made a huge mess. There was a lot of discussion.

Well I changed both my Hyd and HST filers recently and the fluid is not due for a change. I got the tractor warmed up. And used a large plastic cement/mortar mixing "boat" to catch the oil. Before loosening the filters I relieved all the pressure in the bucket and 3 pt. And I only lost about a quart or so of fluid, most of it from inside the filter itself.

I saw a guy on you tube use a shop vac to create a vacuum and change out a leaking oil drain plug on a car and no oil came out. He connected it high up at the oil fill port so he wasen't sucking oil into the vac.

A trick I have used is to plug the breather holes, then park using ramps or a hill to put the filters "uphill". Normally lose a cup or so at most, primarily from the filters as you say. If done with some planning and luck, it can be a pretty quick/easy/clean process.
