I am considering changing my current hydraulic cylinder on a boom lift to a larger cylinder. My current cylinder is 2" in diameter and I may replace it with a larger cylinder. If my current 2" cylinder can lift 1000#, would a 3" cylinder lift 1500# (50% larger diameter results in 50% more lift)? I realize the greater stress on the lift and the cylinder would extend/lift more slowly. Pressure, hydraulic flow rate and cylinder stroke would stay the same.

2" cyl = 3.14 square inches x 1800 psi = 5622 bs
3" cyl = 4.71 square inches x 1800 psi = 8478 lbs
What about the rest of the machine if you increase cylinder then what will break next?

I saved this to favorites when I was putting my FEL together and have referenced it many times since. FREE Calculators for sprockets, pulleys, v-belts, cylinders

Thanks for the info. I will bookmark that page for later use. When I used the calculator for a 2" diameter cylinder with a 1" rod daimeter and 3000 psi, compared to the same 3" diameter cylinder the push force was over 2X as much. (9400 vs 21,000 pounds) Really surprised me at the huge difference. The difference is the significant change in the area within the cylinder.
What I want to change the cylinder on is way over built for a 2" cylinder, but it was what I had available at the time.
I have a tree shear with 2 6" cylinders with about 2" rods. The push/pull at 3000 psi is an astonishing 85,000/75,000 pounds!
