I am now up to 250 hours on my CK30 gear and the dealers mechanic told me today I should change the hydraulic fluid filter.Anyone out there got any do's and don'ts tips on this?Is the best way to get clean containers and drain all the fluid or try and "do it on the fly" and replace fluid lost? He told me to change the fluid at 500 hours.I would like to carefully inspect for debris on the magnet inside so maybe I should plan on draining. ....Any tips would be appreciated. :) Eldon

I have a CK30hst, so I'm not sure on the positioning of your filter. I have two filters. One hydraulic and one for the hst. The only loss is what is in the filters and a few more drops. If your hydraulic filter is behind your right foot, as is mine, then very little loss because the fluid has drained down lower than the filter. I'm sure a gear person will give you a better answer.

I'm almost certain that you are talking about changing the vertical filter that hangs down in front of the rear tire just asking for some stick or stump to come up and rip it off. I've changed that filter 4 or five times now due to maintenance and damage. It is expensive but only a filter full of fluid will be lost. The oil is in the sump. It doesn't get much easier. I would give it two banannas. The fuel filter is much nastier.

Yes it is the vertical and only hydraulic filter on my gear model. The mechanic gave a tip of pinching of the vent on the red filler plug just behind the back of the seat.He said this will minimize fluid loss.I fear that my gear having over 45 quarts of hydraulic fluid for both the hydraulics and transmission may not be as pleasant as the HST models to change. You are right HIghbeam it sure is in a vulnerable position and it was an expensive filter.I have finally mastered the fuel filter and it is a b***h of a thing to change as well. Thanks boys. Eldon

Haven't changed the fuel filter yet, what is hard about changing it?

Have thought of putting a little in line diesel filter before the main fuel filter.

I'm not sure I understand the benefit of just changing the filter. If it is getting clogged up, I would think the fluid must be pretty dirty. If its not clogged, why change it until you change the fluid. I tend to try to replace fluid annually. My filter happens to be washable, so I do that at the same time.

If you are going to change the fluid, my recommendations:

Make sure you have enough containers to hold all the fluid.
Start with the highest drain plug first
Make sure you have a funnel that will play well with your filler hole
use a pump or figure a support for the 5 gallon buckets of fluid while pouring
replace any crush washers on the drain plugs, if so equiped
record the date and fluid/filter info
check or replace front diff fluid while you are under there
change engine oil and filter while you are under there

Just my 2 cents:p

The manual calls out for filter changes and then also calls out for filter/fluid changes at different intervals. If the filter is doing its job then the fluid will be clean and functional while the filter is becoming filled with junk. It's not like engine oil where the filter catches the solids but the dissolved acids and fuels make the oil itself fouled much sooner. I just follow the manual.

The fuel filter is a bugger mostly because of randomly spilled fuel all over the place, need to properly bleed the air, and higher potential to screw it up without knowing it. I have a filter on the shelf that needs to be swapped and I can't remember the procedure. The hydro filter changing procedure is pretty simple to remember.

I always stop and think twice before changing diesel fuel filters. By nature you know the engine won't fire right up usually or will and then die as the lines are purging/ recharging requiring a certain amount of screwing around as opposed to gas engine filters which usually fire right up without any further operator involvement.

I'll even be sure to have the engine nice and warm, oil galleries full, and then swap the filter quickly so that I can quick start the engine and get some RPMs built up before the bubble of air causes the engine to hiccup. So far the Kioti has purred right along but my old dozer would chug a little when I swapped its filters.
