first time changing blades on my G2160 mower. 48inch deck 3 blades. the two outer blades are belt driven the middle blade is driven directly by the PTO through the deck's gear box. the two outer blades tighten up with no slippage at all. the middle blade seemed to me to slip too easily (should it even slip at all?) so I added a third cupped washer to the 2 it normally uses and the blade now has no slippage whatsover. I'm worried about hitting something solid, heavy or immovable with that blade connected directly to the gear case. should I be?

Seems odd that it slips. Are the washers flattened out? Is the bolt bottoming out so it does not tighten? It should not slip at least not by hand anyway

that's my thought, that the washers have flattened out to the point where the bolt shoulder is bottoming out against shaft without applying enough pressure to the blade to hold it firm. I added that third cupped washer and it is real tight and will not give such that I'm concerned it I hit a half buried rock it could damage the gearcase or pto??

I doubt it is held any tighter than if you used 2 new washers but it might not hurt to replace the washers with new ones and see how it is. Another thought is if the blade has been running that loose than maybe it is worn where the washer contacts the blade or the washers themselves are worn too.

I'm sure there is a torque value involved. When I had a mid mount on my Grand L years ago, I always torqued the spindle nuts when changing blades.

There should be 2 cupped washers and a 3rd washer that has either a hex or splines cut in it that mates up to the hex or splines on the end of the spindle shafts

thanks for the responses... there is no splined washer and the shaft is not splined. the blades are brand new. I torqued to spec 85n-m i think it was. the problem is the bolt shoulder is seating on the shaft before seating on the blade. no matter what torque i tighten to once that happens the blade never gets anymore pressure. I think those washers are worn out. Kinda surprised new ones are included in the blade "kit".

I have the 54" deck and 1 time after new blade install with everything tight I had slipping took the deck back off and found 1 of the blades was not on the splines all the way. Make sure you have a block of wood in the other belt blade and there is nothing slipping when you tighten the bolts.
