Harry,
You might start by cleaning the battery ground cable. Take it loose from both the battery and the tractor frame.

If it keeps starting good ,look at the holding relay. I think that model has an external holding relay for the warning light. If the battery does go dead, replace the current limiter. The limiter is one of the few parts that fail more often.

See if it's charging.

As Norm said, the first thing to so is find out if the alt/reg is working. What is battery voltage when not running and then what is voltage when running? Fully charged battery should see 12.7V. When running at speed should see something like 14.25V.

get you a volt meter ,set on 12 volts dc connect the red wire from the volt meter to the pos side of the batt- connect the blk wire from the volt meter to the neg side of the batt. with the engine running you should get somewhere around 14 volts. maybe a little more . If not have your alt. checked at alt. repair shop.
hope this helps

Don't mean to nit pik but you'll need to set the voltmeter to the setting higher than 12 volts to correctly measure what you hope will be 14 something. The meter might not like 14 something volts coming thru on the 12 volt setting.

It won't matter if it's digital meter...........

I think he was merely saying put it on a scale that will read the 12v easily.

Harry, you can buy inexpensive multi - meters from a number of sources - Sears, Radio Shack etc. It's a great help when trying to figure out why something's not working, and on 12 V DC systems very easy to use. The black lead clips to a ground, and the red lead to whatever is supposed to be showing voltage. If it's there, it'll show on the meter, if not - that will show too.

When checking the alternator, clip the black lead to the - post on the battery and the red to the + . Before you start the engine, you should show battery voltage from 12 to about 12.75, after starting the engine and at a fast idle, if the alternator's working the battery should show 14v + or so, if not, I'd take the alt off to a shop to be checked. Most better auto parts stores can check it for you, most will do it for free.

I don't know if this will apply to the tractor (guessing it will), but I just had to replace the alternator in my car. However, it didn't start discharging until after it was warmed up. Since you are getting the light though, it sounds like yours is out completely. But, just in case, if everything checks out initially, you might want to check it again after 10 min or so. The voltmeters are handy things to have. You can also use them on the AC in your house just to make sure an outlet or light really does not have current before you change it.
