This is what I've been working on the last couple of days! I started out with an old JD tandem drag disk ($50), used out of my scrap pile, except the two 5/8" x 4' rods for the rear support braces ($13) & some 1/2" grade 8 bolts out of my bolt bin. I still need to cut the rounded ends off the gang frame from the front section & weld them onto the off-set & switch some blades around (it had set in the dirt too long), then paint it next Spring. Should just cut out the tracks of the 790.

May not be the best disk around, but no more than I'll use it I can't justify buying one! ~~ grnspot

Good project. I am like you I don't need a disc enough to buy new. Yours looks better than mine right now.

I was just thinking how much yours looks like mine. It works good for what I need, breaking up and leveling after plowing. I like the rear support braces. Mine has quite a bit of flex when the 3 point is up. If the royalty fees aren't exhorbitant, I'm a gonna copy your idea. Mark

You're welcome to it!

I will just use mine occasionally to seed some small plots, not even every year. ~~ grnspot

What we are discussing here are actually "disk harrows", generally used as secondary tillage after the ground has been plowed or chiseled.

The "disk plow" is a heavier tool, usually bigger disk blades in a single (angled) row. Use for primary tillage, in place of a moldboard plow.

In more recent years there is also a "plowing disk" available, which is basically a heavier "disk harrow". Again, used for primary tillage, before any other implement.

Hopefully I haven't caused more confusion! ~~ grnspot

pickeringchris - Just one way a disk can be used. In these two photos my son is turning a 30 acre weed patch under to de-compose in preparation for drilling / sewing cereal rye seed in sandy soil using a NHTD75D pulling a 10 ft. disk.
