Cardboard and duct tape for sure...

When I was in my teens I wanted to build a darkroom in our garage but didn't have allot of money. Managed to get the 2x4 studs and a used door from a flee market but couldn't afford even sheetrock.

Luckily just down the street was an appliance store that regularly threw away very large cardboard boxes. I talked the owner into not cutting them up so I could get the largest pieces. Covered both sides of my darkroom walls with cardboard, used duct tape to cover the seams and painted it with some old latex paint. Lasted for 4 years and actually held up well.

The panneling that comes in white 4X8 sheets which is made of a thin hardboard with a sort of plastic shiny coat on the outside is very nice for inside garages. It reflects a lot of light and you can use those eraseable board markers to make notes anywhere on the wall or ceiling. Makes for a very bright and useful wall cover.

I saw on HERE someplace a while back someone used the 1" thick styrofoam boards which had FOIL backingon one side, and they placed foil twards the garage and used TAPE to sead the seams. very reflective as well as insulates! thought that was a great idea. it can be had for 10 ~15 or so bucks a sheet depending on thickness...

I used insulation, then peg board and painted it with white latex paint, it works great and is convenient for hanging stuff on the walls.

Ditto the 1" foil backed Styrofoam idea. There is usually an advertisement in the Farmer's Advance (do they go to MN?) for cheaper prices to farmers from a place in Indiana I believe.

4 mil plastic: comes in clear, or sorta clear, and black.

Styrofoam is frightfully expensive stuff to use for insulation...when I built my garage it was a stud wall type and I used 3 1/2 inch thick fiberglass insulation, then covered that with 7/16 OSB. However, this was back in '89 when OSB could be had for $5 a sheet. If I were going to do it again I'd stick with the fiberglass insulation but use 1/4 inch luan underlayment which can be bought for $6 a sheet these days.

The underlayment is sanded and can easily be painted with no prep work.

When I built my house 15 yrs. ago, I asked the drywall guy how much more to drywall and finish the garage? Cost me $250 more for a 3 car garage and thats finished with a textured ceiling! It was the first thing that I painted! I knew I would not get it done in a long while unless I did it first! I would think that regular fiberglass insulation and drywall would be the cheapest. and give you the best results.
