Cheap metal...fact or fantasy?

I like the older heavy iron tractors. I have a 1968 IH 2444 US built but the same basically as some of the Mahindra models built for IH. it is 40 HP 3700 lbs shipping weight without loader, which weighs about 1,500 lbs. It has been used all of its life as a heavy duty loader tractor. Rears are loaded and It has 1,800 lbs counterweight hanging on the rear. All those years and it still has the origional axle bearings and such in it. I don't think a similiar sized tractor made with a lot of aluminum and plastic in it would have held up nearly as well. I like the Mahindra tractors and they will be at or near the top of my list when it comes time to add to my collection.

btw. Does anyone know the models of Mahindra's that are made on the IH design? like the B444, etc.

Merry Christmas to all real tractor people.

Had a Kubota dealer tell me how strong the new alloy cast is on Kubota. He said if you drop a piece of the cheap cast (Mahindra) and the new alloy cast (Kubota) from a plane the cheap cast would break and the alloy would not.

I took what he said to heart. If I ever decide to drop a tractor from a plane, It's going to be one make of the alloy cast!!!!

That's a new one! I'm really surprised that he didn't try to convince you that if both were dropped at the same time the Kubota would hit first as the castings are so much heavier! Steel is steel.......Wonder why the rear axel bearings/rods/mains and castings in my 46 year old Farmall haven't disintegrated. Oh I suppose its because it's Red and not Orange. When anyone's Kubota turns 50, My Farmall will still be firing up on the first crank at about 80 years old...Not a rant, just seems to be logical. BobG in VA

Not that it matters, but if you dropped a tennis ball and the casting at the same time both of them would hit the ground at the same time. (Assuming that they are dropped from the same height and fall the same distance) Gravity does not care about the mass. Now your toes might if they were in the landing spots . /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
