Re: Cheap power tools

I'm really not into politricks, but know for a fact that it is real tough to compete with China today and that the U.S. economy hurts from their competition. G

Re: Cheap power tools

china is going thru a conversion from a farming nation to an industrial nation, exactly like this country did about a hundred years ago. in time they too will be a wealthy nation, possibly at our expense, but time will tell, we need ways to compete in the world market, not just keep buying cheap stuff overseas, thats a short term soulution to cheap products

Re: Cheap power tools

I hope Vin will chime back in. Although he asked a somewhat generic question, I would guess the ramifications are similar here in the US and down under in Oz where he is. Interesting thing about this site, is we do have some international members.

A little twist, is how the more protectionist Aussie import laws are. Just as an example, look at how they have thier own auto manufacturing. Ford, Dodge, and Chevy have been big players there for years. But... each has had its own factories down there, independant of what has been going on here in the US. Not only do they have thier own factories, but the cars are are typically unique designs to Oz(as an example, look at the '60-70's Ford Falcon vs any Ford made stateside). Toyota, Datsun, and Izuzu have been in there too.

Re: Cheap power tools

Twenty years ago all i could afford was a stick welder a drill and a few hand tools, today the list is enormous thanks to cheap imports. Is this going to turn around and bit us on the bumb or will our standard of living keep improving.

Our car industry has gone though some very tough times, they have found that they have to export to the rest of the world to survive. However today they have no fewer than 5 imported car manufactures to deal with. To date they have survived but i will predict that with in 10 years that China and India will also importing cars to this country and when they do they will be so cheap that our car industry will be gone forever.

For sure these questions may be a little political, but they are fair minded, there is no intent to to be mischievous, just looking for others veiws.

Re: Cheap power tools

The issue is political, but not necessarily partisan.

My feeling is that the idea that you can create wealth with only a "service economy" is ludicrous. Most of the services provided in a "service economy" are provided in support of the real wealth-creating activities in an economy, i.e. mining, agriculture, and manufacturing.

Long story short, I don't see how anyone could not be worried about the direction we are taking here.

Re: Cheap power tools

Billy
My Dad warned me this was going to happen to the USA. quite a few years ago. (hes in manufacturing).
This is the reason I refuse to buy anything made in china.
Besides the economy, the products are just plain inferior in my opinion. I think the best thing we can do is get out of debt, pay off our mortgages, and hang on for whats in store in the future.
I thought nafta meant fair trade not free trade. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I had wondered why some threads said deleted....but were open.

Good move Daedong, this one was getting political fast.
