At $900 for a 48" root grapple, you could weld on a PT QA place for quite a bit less than PT sells theirs...

Found this looking for a thumb for my mini-hoe -- I may buy one of his...

Most of those prices seem reasonable. Have steel prices declined lately?

I ask the seller the question of how much the 48" root grapple weighed.. ans: 500 lbs.

I wouldn't have guessed that much... the skidsteer QA setup must weigh quite a bit, since it doesn't look like there's 500 lbs of steel in the bucket and grapple...

A good root rake should be able to slice through the ground with ease. The one in the picture has brackets in between the fingers for stiffeners, which would impede things. This picture is what I consider a good root rake.

One of these days if I get some time I may have to go check out these root grapples as the place is only about 15 miles from where I live. I wouldn't mind having one for my power trac or my Agco Allis tractor.

The shipping isn't cheap on the root-grapple They quoted me a price of $225 to Jacksonville.Fl

At $900 plus $225 shipping for 500 lbs, puts the cost of the steel and welding comes out to $2.25 a lb . I don't know if that's good or bad. I guess everybody knows that the steel retailers sell by the lb. In scrap yards, you get what you can bargain for.

Here's some feedback on that grapple, from a different forum here. Sounds like he's fairly satisfied with his, on first impression:

Feedback on larger version

Since I bought a PT grapple bucket and mini-hoe after buying the used PT, I don't need one of these. I just saw this and thought it might be worth passing on...

Like others, I keep looking for alternative sources and prices to those coming from Tazewell. I personally think PT would be better off if people didn't consider their QA setup as proprietary. If they're concerned about people using aftermarket or homebuild stuff and damaging the tractors, they could say that such use would invalidate their warranty....
