Check rabies vacine on your pets

During the quarantine, did Kato get periodic shots to counter possible rabies... as a person would get...? Or was the dog just put in isolation to observe for rabies?

I had the understanding the dog's rabies shot (annual) was to prevent the dog from "spreading rabies to others" if infected... I didn't think it "prevented the dog from getting rabies" if bitten by a rabid animal... or have I got my wires crossed...?

John, it keeps the dog from getting rabies if exposed and therefore from spreading it if it came down with a clinical case after the incubation period which can be several months.

During the racoon incident, Kato hid in is dog house. Either a big chicken, or a smart one! BTW, he is about 10lbs larger than Kasha. Since he had no contact with the coon, he just needed to get his shot updated. The neighbors dog, which had contact with the coon, but shots hadn't expired, needed to get a booster, too.

There is no post exposure vacine for dogs like there is for humans. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif BTW, anyone that handled Kasha at the animal hospital needed to have gone through the pre-exposure vacine. When we visited, we could not come close to touching her. That made it tough.

Our dogs will be on a 1-2 year cycle of rabie shots now. learned allot from this experience.
