A guy patented this new tranny. But I can't picture it ever being used in real life. Too much flaws

What do you guys think of it in terms of efficiency/durability/practicality?

Thanks.

There have been CV Transmissions used since the 50's. When I lived in Germany back in the 70's, a buddy of mine had a BMW with a belt type CV transmission.

There is always room for a better mousetrap… Don’t know that this is necessarily it.

Tis nice to see someone is thinking about new things to break in future tractors. KennyV.

CVT and IVT trannys are what you will find coming into play on the larger hp tractors. They do not rob the tractor of hp like a hydro and are a much better system for large hp tractors. John Deere has their own system as does CNH and Agco but they are not cheap. Some day the hydro/gear war will be a hydro/gear/IVT war in which we all know hydro will be better still /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

His variable diameter pulley version cannot work? The driver teeth mounted along the pulley are infinately variable width, so no driver chain teeth could fit between them. This is just totally unworkable as described. It would be like using a 50 pitch roller chain, and expecting it to work on 30, 40, 50, 60, & 80 pitch sprokets. Can't work.

His twin cones suffer the same problem to a lesser degree.

This is why everyone uses friction drive.

Maybe I missed the inovation that allows it to work? Help?

Did you watch the video?

It seems to work with what he calls the "floating sprocket bars" in the pulley. Of course how well it will work at high speed under load remains to be seen.

Not sure if it WILL work for production or not. lots of problems assoiated with the design just as always. the demo unit while functional it doesn't have a LONG TERM study done OR have much available torque output with the demo chain it is using now.

I would think using todays CNC ability a fully pitched tooth arangement could be built similar to a turbine impeller where the constant messing could be done using a floating gear as the intermeadiat controller. you can't see the speed control method WELL in the video but it is workable...

anyhow one day it will be solved a bit but I agree with others the CV trans has been around a long time... think how OLD snowmobiles worked with the belt and pully arangement or any of th emethods above. true Honda actually put one into production a few years back with somewhat lackluster performance and liveability ...

Combines & swathers used variable V belt since the early 50s. Some still do.

Don't understand how the chain catches the 'tooth' when the pitch beween the teeth varies. If the flexable tooth is recessed, then the chain is grinding, not engaged - and will slam into the tooth. Can't see it lasting more than the rubber or steel V-belt design.....

Interesting concepts.

There is an article on new CVT's in the Oct 2004 Popular Mechanics - page 93. Check it out.
