4310 Hydro. Was just doing my 50hr service. When I pulled out the suction screen (long, metal one in the lower trans case housing) I found the screen was broken. At first I was concerned but after looking into it, it only looks like a pre-filter to the main spin-on suction filter. However, just a note to look at it if anyone does a trans fluid change. The new one was spot welded, not continous, so it can't be very efficient, but it did have a lot of junk on it.

I did my own as well. Didn't have too much junk in it. There was still plenty of area open for the fluid to pass by. The screen seamed to be in tact. This is just a pre filter to get the big chunks usually from the assembly process.

I changed my transmission fluid at 25 hours since my 3 PT hitch would not lift. Didn't see any problems with the suction side filter and both spin on filters did not look bad either. It did the trick and the 4510 is working normally now.

Sure would be nice if there was a way to check the prefilter without having to dump all the fluid. Could be just a couple of valves to isolate the filters.

Re: Not really big deal

After doing the whole 50 hr service myself, my assessment would be that the you probably could wait till 100hrs. non of the filters had much on them except for the pre-suction screen, but it too still had a lot of surfacr area left as it is pretty large. I would still do the engine oil but my trans fluid and filters could have easily have waited. One thing cool, was while changing the hydraulci filter, a saw a tag (on the trans???) that sais 'SAUR something" Made in USA!!! pleasantly suprised!!

I have a 4300 hydro and learned by accident that there was a recall because the suction screens were coming loose and getting the insides fouled up/ My dealer picked up and redelivered theb tractor and apparently welded the suction screen into place so It would not come loose.

We just got a 4310 in December, and are nearing the 50 hr service. Do you know if the recall was just for the (older) 4300, or does it include the (newer) 4310s, as well. Also, the manual says to replace the side suction filter at the 50 hr service, but the dealer (Barnett in Snohomish, WA) said he talked with someone in service at Deere, and they said don't bother. Comments?

In a brand new tractor I like to change all the filters and oils. I like to think that any filings or metal shavings that might have made it through the birthday process will be caught by the first filters. Probably just peace of mind.

Some machines in this P.I.N. range were repaired at the factory. An exception list of those tractors will not be printed. JDIS software users, use your on line "PIP Register" or reference your "PIP STATUS" screens for tractors involved in this program.

SITUATION:

The transmission sump screen can fall into the bottom of the transmission due to inadequate bonding of the screen to collar. Unfiltered oil can enter the hydraulic system. The transmission gears may ingest the screen.

SOLUTION:

A new sump screen assembly is introduced which incorporates a recess in the collar for a more secure bond of the screen.
