Depends on the gate material and size. I think a tube gate or cattle panel gate up to 12' would be fine. Even up to 20 if you put a gate wheel on it. If it's WI or other heavy material.. go up to a 'corner' post.. like a 6-8 or better.

When increasing post dia. and/or weight you hang from it, also consider the need to sink it deeper than the other posts.

On a different note, be cautious about how much of the fumes you breathe from the Copper solution. I was just getting over some bronchitis and started applying some of this stuff in some touch up situations on my log house. It got my lungs a little tender again. You might think about getting one of those respirator type masks from Lowe's or H.D. and wear it if you're gonna' be breathin' very much of the stuff. Don't line the posts up against the wall of your house (especially under a window) for soaking. Use the wall of an out building-a barn, or an already existing fence or something so the fumes are going somewhere other than into your house.

I agree... it's pretty nasty stuff. And it WILL remove hair.. and leave a long lasting stain on skin... ( I know this for a fact... )

Thirty years ago when I spent summers as a wilderness guide, another of the part time leaders was a chemistry professor. He used to cook up his own 100% pure DEET in the lab for free. He never would put it on his skin though, just dabbed it on his collar, sleeve cuffs, outer edge of socks. etc. He said, "Think about how strong bugs are in relation to their size. They move things six times as big as themselves around and some bees can survive being stomped by a human. Now anything that can kill a bug is strong enough to kill a human if you let enough of it build up in your system."

I guess I could paraphrase him and say that anything strong enough to eternally mummify a log is strong enough to turn a human into a mummy as well. Happy Halloween!

"It will remove hair" got my attention. I am already half way to total baldness and cannot afford losing more for a few fence posts. Thanks for the warning.

Specifically.. what i meant.. is if you get it splashed on you.. you will sport an aqua marine 'tatoo' for days.. and hair at the site of the splash -usually- lets go. Unless you splash it on your head... I think the hair up top is ok (grin). Mines starting to thin up top myself.. so I understand your concern.
