I have a spot, outdoors and under roof that I thought about moving our small chest freezer to for the winter. It seems obvious to me that it might save some energy in the cold and get it out of our way when the house tends to get "tight" when the cold pushes more activities inside the house.
Is there something that I'm not considering?
I am concerned about the critters seeking it out for shelter and pos. chewing on it.

Both our freezer's are in the garage but we do know several people that have them outside under cover and no problems. You may want to have it locked/secured somehow in case a hungry bear would like a snack.

I put two of them on an uncovered deck for a few years. I just built a box around them with a lid to keep the weather off. Both are still running fine 15 years later.

My only concern would be critters building nests in the underside and theft of meat by bipeds (no bears in Indiana).

Here's a story related to freezers kept outside in garages....

Last year our neighbor went out on his back deck for coffee before sun-up. As he stepped out onto his deck a person went running by him out their driveway. He chased the guy down the block past a parked car and into some woods, where he lost him. On his walk back to his house he found several packages of meat in the street. He realized the guy probably came from their open garage where they have a chest freezer. Apparently the person dropped the packages during the chase. He called the cops from his house. When the cops came, he noticed the parked car was gone. He kicked himself for not getting the plates. Anyhow, after inventorying his freezer the only thing that was not recovered was a package of chicken guts! :licking: Apparently they cleaned some chickens the day after trash pickup and didn't want them stinking in the can for a week, so they wrapped them up and put them in the top of the freezer until trash day! Imagine the thief's feelings when he got home with his hard earned "prize".

My FIL put an upright freezer on his back porch (covered). The raccoons ate the seal off of it trying to get into the freezer. It cost him over $100.00 for a new seal (it was a new freezer). :ashamed: He took a strip of metal and fastened it to the edge of the freezer to cover the new seal.

I have a 21 cubic foot deep freeze in my garage and have had no problem with it. It is unheated and uncooled (the garage that is :D ).

A coworker lost a chest full of venison & fish last year when his basement got too cold yet remained above freezing without a power outage. Seems his freezer (only a couple of years old) uses a refrigerant that won't work below 40-50F temperatures? Check out the specs on yours. As a kid we had an old freezer that was in an attached unheated shed. In northern NH it didn't even need to be plugged in for 3 months in the winter. MikeD74T

The one that I bought said that it could be used in an uncooled and unheated environment like a basement or garage.

The frost free freezers try and dump defrost water every so often but if they are located in a frozen area then that defrost water can freeze and pretty soon the defrost system only serves to wrap the inside cooling coils in clear ice. When this happens, no fridge air passes over the coils so the freezer will thaw. You then need to manually defrost your frost free freezer.
