With Robots set to do the fighting in the near future, heavy armour might be a thing of the past. Besides, sometimes speed is an advantage. They had RAV programs (Rapid Assault Vehicles) in the 80s, basically a dune buggy with a 50, and the thinking was that it would be hard to hit. Maybe IEDs changed their thinking.
