Chicken enclosure

Got the wife one of these in the CC-78-R2-H size for her 6 hens. CC ONLY - CC-78 Series

They're expensive, but the kit was good quality and kind of a fun project to assemble. The only mod we made was to put it on a "foundation" of PT 2x6s with 12" of welded wire cloth stapled flat to the bottom around the outside edge. I spread a little gravel around the outside to cover the wire and make a "walkway". No wire on the inside so the hens can scratch and dig. She keeps them in it all the time because of the dogs. We've had no issues (so far) with any predators. The hens seem quite happy - almost always get 6 eggs/day.

Nice size run Leejohn. How long has the metal been in the ground? Any signs of rusting?

It was put in around 2008 or 9 and no rust yet.

I buried the hardware cloth in the ground like an L. This has kept anything from digging in. The squirrels are the big pain. they work and work all day to get in.

This is our first coop right after getting chickens, but before I had the nesting boxes built. It's a cyclone fence dong kennel that a client gave me that sat around for years without a purpose until this idea came up. I put it next to the garden fence so I could make it ten feet wide and 20 ft long.

My wife loves her chickens!! They all have personalities. Some are clowns, others are friendly, and some are just plain crazy!!!

Now we open up the coop every morning and enjoy seeing them wonder around the yard, hunting bugs, or just interacting with each other.

At first, our chickens where too young to lay eggs, but once they started, my wife became obsessed with getting chickens that lay different colored eggs.

and a few pics of some of our chickens and roosters. Most roosters are the devil. They are evil monsters that abuse and even kill the chickens with their non stop assaults. And if they cannot find a chicken to terrorize, they go after people and sometimes even our dogs. Those roosters end up dead real fast. Three all of a sudden "turned" last weekend that I took care of. They are nice to look at, but once they turn, you have to kill them as soon as possible. Saying that, we have about 6 or 7 roosters that are great. They protect the hens, the never attack people, and they do their job fertilizing eggs without tearing apart the hens. The biggest one in these pictures is 3 years old and everything you could hope for in a rooster.

If you have a rooster in a pen, and it becomes chaos in there, you need to kill the rooster.
