Pete... I love the Buff's! They are my first experience with raising poultry. They are HUGE. I'm guessing they are only about 5 months old. I have 4 roosters and the rest hens. Do you want a couple of roosters? We could meet half-way, say Chesterfield or so I bought them from a farm up in Gum Spring/ Louisa in Feb. Hi neighbor,
You're right, electric fence is about it and some bears won't even pay attention to that. I've had bees for 4 years now and I've been hit by the bears about 6 times. I try not to take it personally and get too mad at the bears though. I figure if you stick a pot of honey out in the middle of the woods, what do you think a bear is going to do/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif?
So needless to say... I don't harvest too much honey.

Pete, I've got buffs among my hens. They're good layers, and pretty calm, I like them.

When you mention court, I guess you are talking small claims court. How do you prove your case? I saw their dog kill a chicken, but I don't have proof. The only proof is my word. Is that enough for court?

I am generally able to find a witness. Once I was lucky enough to have a camera, and another time I leashed the dog and the police officer testified to the feathers on his muzzle.

Again, Tamara and I have had far better results ignoring the dog and treating these things as destruction of property matters, i.e., police matters instead of animal control issues.

Thanks, Pete. I guess it depends on the individual police department. We started out by calling the police, but the Cambridge, New York, police department just refered us to the animal control officer. We're still waiting for his report.

This is clearly a case of destuction of private property. Call your local sheriff and report it as such. Insist on swearing out a complaint to to that effect. Thus making the owners the responsible party. Therefore directly facing the consequences of thier dogs actions. Perhaps the threat of a heavy fine or jail time for themselves, will change thier attitude.

That's how I handled it. Had to be persistent the first time. Once you convince the police you could care less about how it happened, that from your point of view your property was destroyed, the battle is won.
